Overview
Sunnefa is a PhD candidate at the Australian National Centre for Ocean Resources and Security (ANCORS), University of Wollongong. Her research examines regulatory gaps in international law and policy regarding anthropogenic underwater noise pollution, focusing on the potential of the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction Agreement (BBNJ) to establish measures for its mitigation. Her work analyses the role of the BBNJ Agreement, the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, and existing organisations such as the International Maritime Organisation and the International Seabed Authority.
Sunnefa holds an MSc in Environmental Policy from Wageningen University, Netherlands, with an honours in sustainable development diplomacy.
Beyond her PhD research, she contributes to ocean equity projects with a focus on ocean governance, marine conservation, and the equitable management of transboundary fisheries. Her work in these areas include advancing inclusive solutions for global ocean management challenges.
